Overview

Our client, a leading machining manufacturer, had trouble scaling hardware during busy project times, leading to delays and reduced productivity. Upgrading software with every release was becoming a tedious & error prone job. To address various such concerns, we implemented virtual desktops instead of on-site workstations for SolidWorks. Working closely with the customer team & AWS team, we deployed SolidWorks on Amazon AppStream 2.0.

Primary Goals and Objectives
  • Quickly make SOLIDWORKS and new releases available for all the users.
  • Enhance overall system performance to minimize lag or delays in design tasks.
  • Manage resources scaling up or down seamlessly based on project demands.
  • Reduce expensive hardware management.
Features and Functionalities
  • Minimized downtime and disruption to workflow, enhancing overall productivity.
  • Centralized management of software updates, user access control, and session management.
  • Providing instant access to the application from authorized devices with an internet connection.
Key Deliverables and Milestones
  • Usable SOLIDWORKS on the cloud using AWS AppStream2.0.
  • Application accessibility and appropriate performance while using over the internet.
  • Ensure data persistency, reliability & security using S3.
Challenges

Careful attention to ensure compliance and avoid potential SOLIDWORKS licensing issues.

Additionally, obtaining a dedicated graphics server from AWS support was necessary to optimize performance for tasks like rendering 3D models in SOLIDWORKS.

Ensure customer is on right internet bandwidth as the whole application delivery was on Cloud.

Implementation of Amazon AppStream 2.0

Successfully deployed SOLIDWORKS on Amazon AppStream 2.0, enabling quick access to the application from authorized devices with an internet connection.

Infrastructure Scalability

Implemented a scalable infrastructure on AWS to manage resources seamlessly based on project demands, reducing delays and ensuring optimal performance.

Centralized Software Management

Established centralized management for software updates, user access control, and session management, minimizing downtime and disruption to workflow.

Efficient Resource Utilization

Optimized resource utilization through cloud deployment, enabling the customer to pay for resources as needed and avoid unnecessary expenditure on idle hardware.

Conclusion

Minutus deployed SOLIDWORKS on Amazon AppStream 2.0 to reduce installation time, seamlessly scale resources, and boost system performance. It also addressed issues of specific hardware availability on demand and as needed instead of waiting for weeks or months at times while offering an intuitive interface, secure data storage, and uninterrupted workflow. Overall, this implementation streamlined SOLIDWORKS usage, enhancing productivity and efficiency.
